Compact Fluorescent Garden Lights from 3R Lighting
www.3rlighting.com
Garden Lights are Compact Fluorescent Growlights. The ballast is built in and these grow lights are powered by regular 115v-120v household electricity--NO separate ballast needed. Each growlight uses 105, 150, or 200 Watts. The 105 Watt compact fluorescent puts out over 7,600 initial lumens (about 700 foot candle equivalent--see chart below). A 105 Watt Garden Light uses about as much electricity as one standard 100 Watt lightbulb or two standard 60 Watt lightbulbs but shines the colors plants actually use--better for the plants, more efficient use of electricity, fuller and faster growth.
The 105 Watt Compact Fluorescent has been redesigned and is now more dependable.

These Compact Fluorescent Lamps have a "Mogul" sized base. A Regular Light bulb has a medium size base, which is smaller. We have an adapter available. We also have a specially made light fixture for the 105 Watter which is suspended from the ceiling. The 105 Watt compact fluorescent bulb will screw directly into this light fixture.
With the adapter, the bulb can be screwed directy into any standard floor, table lamp, or socket that can clear 16 inches for the 105 Watt bulb or 18 inches for the 150 and 200 Watt bulb. The adapter cost is $19.95 each or if it is ordered in combination with a compact fluorescent bulb the cost is $10.00 more for a total of $79.95 for each 105 Watt bulb and adapter delivered to USA, $95.95 for each 150 Watt bulb and adapter delivered to USA and $109.95 for each 200 Watt bulb and adapter delivered to USA.

Q: Which is better, The 105 Watt Garden Light or a 175 Watt HID Light?
A: It depends. The 105 Watt Garden Light has a great price and can be used in any floor lamp, table lamp, or socket with the adapter. It works fine for houseplants, starting seedlings or cuttings, or for low light herbs or lettuce--like in a small indoor kitchen vegetable garden. Since it uses only 105 Watts, it uses about the same electricity as a standard 100 Watt lightbulb. The bulb stays cool and can be placed right next to plants without heating them.
The HID light is better for growing a high light plant like a tomato or pepper. A Compact Fluorescent Light just does not have enough power to drive the growth a tomato plant needs. A 175 Watt MH HID light uses a bit more electricity than two standard 75 Watt lightbulbs but less than two 100 Watt standard lightbulbs. The 175 Watt Metal Halide light is also excellent for sprouting seeds and growing kitchen herbs; the HID Metal Halide light will cover a one and a half foot by one and a half foot garden with a stronger light than the 105 Watt compact fluorescent.
Most houseplants do not need to grow big and fast and Compact Fluorescent Lights can be just right for perking them up in Winter or in a dark corner. All CFL's shine Blue Light rated at 5000K or 6500K and will work well for greening plants like lettuce, herbs, arugula, etc.
Q: You always say "artificial light fades fast"; how fast is "fast"?
A: For every foot a ray of light travels, it loses about one quarter of its power. So for the 105 Watt Gardenlight which has over 700 foot-candles right next to the bulb there is:
about 525 foot-candles at 1 foot away from the bulb,
about 394 foot-candles at 2 feet away from the bulb,
about 295 foot-candles at 3 feet away from the bulb,
about 221 foot-candles at 4 feet away from the bulb, and
about 140 foot-candles at 5 feet away from the bulb.
Now, you also have to consider the difference between simply keeping a plant from dying off and giving it plenty of light to thrive. More information is available in the 3R Lighting Tutorial.

A 200 Watt Compact Fluorescent Lamp is approximately equivalent to an 800 Watt Incandescent Lamp.
This is one BIG Honker!
The 200 Watt CFL is a good plant garden light. It works well for houseplants or for growing vegetables like lettuce, arugula, or leafy herbs like basil, parseley, oregano, etc. It can work well for an indoor kitchen herb garden. It works very well in conjunction with natural sunlight.
Each lamp has a mogul base and can be a good replacement bulb for high or low bay fixtures or chandeliers in churches or ballrooms where a mogul base incandescent lamp is now being used.
About 5-inches in diameter by about 15-inches long, 200 Watt CFL shines about 12,000 initial lumens at 5000K.

Fluorescent is the correct spelling because an arc of electricity causes the lamp to fluoresce or glow. Flourescent is a popular mis-spelling, even though a powerful fluorescent lamp will make your plants flourish.
