To calculate the volume of a plant container:

Round Pots--Measure the height and measure across the bottom (diameter). So for example, the pot is 8 inches tall and 6 inches across. Take the measurement across the bottom and divide it in half. In the example, take 6 inches and divide by 2 to get 3 inches. Multiply this number times itself. In this example, 3 times 3 to give you 9. Multiply this number by Pi, which is roughly 3.14 or 22/7. So, in our example, 9 times 3.14 gives you 28.26 cubic inches--but it is often OK to just estimate with 3 times nine giving you about 27 cubic inches. Now take this number and multiply it by the height of the pot. In the example, 28.26 times 8 gives you 226.08 cubic inches. If you are using the "close enough for government work" method, the you have 27 times 8 giving you 216 cubic inches.

So this is how many cubic inches there are in the pot, but what does that mean?

To change the cubic inches to US Dry Gallons multiply by .00372. So, in our example, 226.08 times .00372 gives you .84 gallons. In the estimation method, you get 216 times .00372 which gives you about .8 gallons.

There are 1,728 Cubic Inches in a Cubic Foot. So you can get a rough idea of how many pots you can fill from a bag of soil--if you aren't looking at both at once.

Square Pots--Measure the height and measure across the bottom. So for example, the pot is 8 inches tall and 6 inches across each side. Multiply the length of two sides of the bottom number. So in the example, multiply 6 times 6 to give you 36 square inches. Now take this number and multiply it by the height of the pot. In the example, 36 times 8 gives you 288 cubic inches.

To change the cubic inches to US Dry Gallons multiply by .00372. So, in our example, 288 times .00372 gives you 1.07 gallons. Or in other words a fat one gallon, or one gallon's worth of soil or growrocks will be below the rim.

N.B. Both pots from the above example may be referred to as "One Gallon Pots".
